Join a tour guide to view the interior of the Federal townhouse on the corner of Main and Wall Streets in Uptown Kingston. Influenced by the Colonial Revival, the house reflects the era of the antiques dealer Fred J. Johnston (1911-1993) who hoped to inspire the visitor with the collection of 18th and early 19th century furnishings and decorative arts. Read more.

Historic District Walking Tours

  • Tours available May through the end of October. See descriptions below for tour schedule.
  • Fee: $10 adults; $5 child under 16.  Free to Friends of Historic Kingston members.
  • Group or private tours can be arranged by special appointment: (845) 339-0720.
  • Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more.

1658 Stockade National Historic District

Offered on the first Saturday of the month, departing at 11 a.m. from the FHK Gallery, on the corner of Wall and Main Streets.

Enjoy a guided walking tour of the early Dutch settlement in New York State and the neighborhood where New York State was born in 1777.  Walk the heart of the original stockade village of Kingston and visit the Old Dutch Church burying ground and pass by the Ulster County Courthouse. The tour concludes with a visit to the interior of the circa 1812 Fred J. Johnston House.

Stockade National Historic District Tour

Rondout National Historic District

Offered the last Saturday of the month, departing at 11 a.m. from at the gazebo in T.R. Gallo Park, 73 West Strand St.

Hear how immigrants and entrepreneurs developed a thriving maritime village along the terminus for the Delaware and Hudson Canal. View the rich legacy of commercial buildings, cast-iron storefronts, homes and churches built by the immigrant community. Some uphill walking is involved.
