Follow the footsteps of George Clinton from his birth on a Hudson Valley farm to his election as New York State’s first governor and vice-president of the United States under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Born of immigrant parents in 1739, Clinton’s rise from modest roots to national stature is the story of a passionate Patriot and protector of the welfare of the common man throughout his 40 years of public service. This 18-minute documentary shows Clinton as the heroic Brigadier General who led the defense of Fort Montgomery on October 6, 1777, and resolutely led the fight to add the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. It reveals the greatness of character of a man whose influence on New York State and the nation endures even today.

Produced by Friends of Historic Kingston, the DVD can be used to provoke classroom discussions about subjects such as the qualities of a good leader and true hero, fighting for one’s beliefs, the importance of values in politics and leaving a valuable legacy. Suitable for grades 4-12.

“FOOTPRINTS IN STONE”
WALKING TOUR FOR CHILDREN

The Friends of Historic Kingston offer a special tour of the 1658 Stockade National Historic District designed for children age 7-12. Constructed as an outdoor treasure hunt, the tour shows children how they can discover history on their own by learning to look at the streetscape and buildings for clues. Each child is given an illustrated list of objects to find along the tour route, and these objects serve as the springboard for discussing life in 17th and 18th century Kingston and the value of preserving our architectural heritage.

An informational packet is sent in advance to the teacher or adult supervisor to help prepare children for the tour. Fee: $2 per child. To arrange a school or group tour: 845.339.0720

A SCHOOL PROJECT USING KINGSTON’S HISTORICAL RESOURCES

When 10-year-old Mira from Berkeley CA was assigned a school project related to colonial history and the middle colonies, she began by doing a search on Google, which yielded a great amount of information about the Tappen House on Green Street in Kingston’s 1658 Stockade National Historic District. Read the description of her project which included creating an 1/8″ = 1′-0″ scale model of the Tappen House. In August, Mira and several members of her family traveled to Kingston and through arrangements made by the Friends of Historic Kingston, were thrilled to actually visit the Tappen House.

We hope Mira’s research project will inspire teachers locally to use the resources of Kingston’s 1658 Stockade National Historic District as a “living laboratory.”
